Climate Induced Migrants Are the Bangladesh Priority in Marrakech Climate Negotiations

Today eight civil society organizations has organized a seminar title “CoP 22 Global Climate Conference: Proposal from Civil Society on Behalf of Most Vulnerable Population” on the of eve of global climate conference to be held in Marrakech, Morocco during 7 to 18 November 2016. On behalf of Bangladesh government Dr Hasan Mahmud MP, Chairman Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoE&F) announced in the seminar that “Climate Induced Migrants issue will get top priority in Marrakech climate conference. He was the Chair of the seminar while Minister MoE&F Mr. Anwar Hossain Monju MP was there as the Chief Guest. The seminar was moderated by Rezaul Karim Chowdhury of EquityBD. On behalf of the group key note presentation was given Sharmind Neelormi of CSRL, other speakers are Md Ziaul Haque Director, Department of Environment, Dr. Nilufar Banu, BUP, Mr. Qumrul Islam Chowdhury of FEJB, Mr.Kawser Rahman of BCJF and Mr. Mojahidul Islam Noyan of Oxfam. Eight organization who organize the seminar were BAPA, BCJF, BIPNetCCBD, CDP, CSRL, EquityBD and FEJB.
On behalf of the group Ms Sharmind Neelormi proposed key five demands, which are (i) Bangladesh government should follow an inclusive and a transparent process in international negotiation, (ii) Government must keep pressure especially on developed and advance developed countries to raise their ambition in respect of mitigation target, (iii) There must be all grants in respect of climate finance and which should be additional to all other assistance to developing countries,, (vi) Climate induced migrants issue should be the key issue in respect of negotiation in Loss and Damage discourse, and (v) Global adaptation goal should have priority to the need of most vulnerable countries.
Minister Anwar Husain Monju MP said that government and civil society should work together for country interest in Marrakech conference. Chairman Parliamentary Standing Committee on MoE&F Dr Hasan Mahmud MP said that Government policy is to give highest priority on climate induced migrant issue in this conference. He also said that government is not in favor of any loan or any commercial attitude in climate finance, as Bangladesh is not at all responsible in climate catastrophes, so Bangladesh position is to demand compensation in this regard. He also said Bangladesh government will also raise the issue of setting picking year in respect of temperature and mitigation. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury of EquityBD the moderator of the seminar mentioned that, Government provide access to civil society in the total negotiation process both in country and abroad too.
